If you already speak Spanish, congratulations: you're standing on a linguistic launchpad. Spanish shares roots, grammar patterns, and thousands of words with several other major languages, which means your next language might be easier to pick up than you think. Here's exactly which ones, and why.
Why Some Languages "Click" Faster for Spanish Speakers
Spanish descends from Latin, along with several other modern languages. The closer a language's family tree sits to Spanish, the more overlap you'll find in vocabulary, sentence structure, and even verb conjugation. Linguists often use lexical similarity (how many words two languages share in recognizable form) as a rough predictor of how fast a new language will feel natural. The higher that number, the shorter your learning curve tends to be.
With that in mind, here's how the languages we teach stack up, from easiest to most challenging for a native Spanish speaker.
1. Portuguese: Practically Your Neighbor
Portuguese and Spanish share an estimated 89% lexical similarity, among the highest of any two major world languages. If you've ever listened to Portuguese and caught yourself understanding half the conversation without trying, that's not a coincidence. Grammar structures, verb tenses, and sentence order line up closely enough that many of our students pick up conversational Portuguese in a fraction of the time it takes to learn a language from scratch.
2. Italian: Spanish's Stylish Cousin
Italian comes in close behind, at roughly 80% lexical overlap with Spanish. The rolling rhythm, the gendered nouns, the verb endings: it all feels remarkably familiar. Where Italian differs is mostly pronunciation and a handful of grammar quirks, exactly the kind of thing a good instructor helps you sort out in weeks, not years. Our Italian classes are a favorite among Spanish-speaking students for this reason.
More Challenging Languages to Learn as a Spanish Speaker
1. French: A Little More Work, Still Worth It
French sits a bit further down the similarity scale (around 75%), mostly because of spelling and pronunciation that don't always match how the words sound. But the grammar logic, gendered nouns, similar sentence order, and comparable tenses will feel familiar. Add in the doors French opens across Europe, Canada, and West Africa, and it's easy to see why so many of our students add French to their language résumé.
2. German: A Step Outside the Family
German isn't a Romance language, so the overlap with Spanish drops noticeably. You'll run into a case system and compound words that look intimidating at first. That said, German still borrows plenty from Latin, and with the right structure it's far from impossible; just budget more time and patience for German than you would for its Romance-language cousins.
3. The Big Leap: Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian
These sit furthest from Spanish on the difficulty scale: different scripts (or none shared at all), tonal systems, and grammar structures with no real Spanish equivalent. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian are some of the most valuable languages to know professionally. They just come with a steeper, and pretty rewarding, climb.
